Learning isn’t one-size-fits-all. That’s why small group instruction is a core part of our support for our students at Fox Valley Virtual School (FVVS). When students are allowed to learn the way they learn best, they grow in skill and confidence.

What Is Small Group Instruction?

Imagine a classroom with 30 students—each with their own strengths, challenges, and learning styles. When everyone is expected to learn the same material, in the same way, at the same pace, it’s inevitable that some students will be left behind or left unchallenged.

That’s where small group instruction comes in. In an online school like FVVS, teachers can create breakout sessions so students can work together in small groups and then return to the classroom for a whole-class discussion.

By grouping students based on their specific needs, skills, or goals, teachers can tailor lessons more effectively. Students who need extra time and support get the space to build understanding at their own pace, while those who grasp concepts quickly can move ahead and deepen their learning. Everyone gets what they need to grow.

Why Small Group Instruction Works

Personalized Support in Real Time
Small groups allow teachers to give timely, individualized feedback. Whether it's brainstorming essay topics or breaking down a tricky math concept, students get the support they need—right when they need it.

More Opportunities to Engage
In smaller settings, students are more likely to ask questions, share ideas, and actively participate. This kind of engagement builds stronger academic habits and boosts confidence. It also reduces overwhelm and helps students who are struggling with anxiety or shyness feel more comfortable and secure.

A Sense of Community
Even in a virtual setting, small groups foster connection. Students build relationships with peers and teachers, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels seen and heard.

Targeted Instruction
Teachers can design lessons that align with the group’s specific needs, allowing them to skip past what students have already mastered and dive into what they’re ready to tackle next. And because students are working alongside peers with similar learning goals, there’s less pressure or embarrassment when extra support is needed—it’s a safe space to ask questions and build confidence.

Small Groups = Big Growth

Here’s an example of how small group instruction really works! Recently, a group of students at Fox Valley Virtual School needed help organizing their ideas and structuring an essay. Rather than offering general, one-size-fits-all advice, we created a focused small group session tailored specifically to their needs. Using collaborative tools, open discussion, and personalized guidance, students were able to walk through the writing process together—brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising in real-time with support from their teacher and their peers.

The results were powerful. Students gained clarity in their writing, built confidence in their abilities, and developed a stronger grasp of how to approach academic tasks independently. By working in a small group, they received the targeted instruction they needed—without feeling rushed or overlooked. It’s just one example of how small group instruction leads to meaningful growth.

How Do You Learn Best?

As adults, we often get to choose how we learn best. Curious about a topic? We might watch a video, read articles, attend a lecture, or even take a hands-on class. We naturally gravitate toward the learning style that works for us. But in many traditional classrooms, students don’t have that same flexibility. Too often, learning is delivered in just one format—usually through lecture—leaving many students disengaged or struggling to keep up.

At Fox Valley Virtual, we believe students deserve the same opportunity to learn in ways that make sense for them. Small group instruction is one of the ways we bring that belief to life. Visual learners can explore topics through interactive online tools and diagrams. Auditory learners benefit from open discussions and the ability to ask questions in real-time. And students who prefer a hands-on approach can actively participate in collaborative activities, apply their learning in meaningful ways, and receive immediate feedback.

Small groups make education more inclusive, responsive, and effective by creating space for all learning styles. It’s not about fitting students into a mold—it’s about designing instruction that fits them.

Connect. Empower. Grow.
