Every child learns a little differently. Some prefer to listen, while others need to talk things out. Some think best when they’re moving their bodies. Some students thrive on worksheets, others freeze at the sight of them. At Fox Valley Virtual School, we know there’s no single path to learning—and that’s exactly why personalized education matters.
From Milwaukee to Menomonie to Marinette, we offer an online learning experience for all Wisconsin families that’s flexible, responsive, and built around your child. Instead of expecting students to adapt to the system, we adapt the system to fit them.
What Is Personalized Learning—Really?
It’s easy to hear “personalized learning” and think it just means students moving at different speeds. And while pacing is part of it, there’s so much more.
Personalized learning is a learner-first approach. Rather than handing out the same assignment to every student, teachers assess each student’s strengths, needs, and abilities. Then, teachers can determine how to group students according to their needs. Here’s an example:
In a third-grade class at Fox Valley Virtual School, students were working on a reading assignment focused on identifying the main idea and supporting details in nonfiction texts. The core concept was introduced during whole-class instruction, but as the teacher reviewed student responses, it became clear that learners approached the task with varying levels of understanding.
The teacher created three small groups, each with the same goal, but using different paths to achieve it.
- One group needed more support, so they reread a short, high-interest nonfiction passage together and used sentence starters and a graphic organizer to guide their thinking. The teacher modeled how to ask, “What is this mostly about?” and coached students through identifying key details.
- A second group was on track but needed practice applying the skill independently. They read a new passage in pairs, discussed their answers, and used a rubric to check their work before regrouping to reflect with the teacher.
- The third group was ready to go deeper. They chose their own nonfiction texts and compared two articles on the same topic, identifying how main ideas and supporting details could be framed differently depending on the author’s focus. They then created short presentations to share their findings with classmates.
Each group had a unique path, but all students ultimately reached the same learning target: understanding and identifying the main idea and supporting details in nonfiction texts. By meeting students where they were, the teacher ensured that everyone moved forward with confidence.
This is what high-quality small group instruction looks like—focused, flexible, and designed to help every student succeed. Personalized learning isn’t about singling out kids who need more help; it’s about making sure that every student is met with tasks that truly help them grow.
How Does Online School Support Personalized Learning?
Online school has fewer interruptions and distractions than a traditional school day, which means more minutes are spent on actual learning. Not only do these extra minutes really add up to something big, but they also give students time for more creativity in their work.
Here’s another example. Imagine a fourth grader who loves science but struggles with writing. In a traditional science classroom, they might have to write longer responses about scientific processes before they’ve fully grasped the concept of sentence structure and paragraphs.
At Fox Valley Virtual School, that same student could demonstrate scientific understanding by creating a labeled diagram, submitting a voice explanation, or creating a short presentation. Meanwhile, their teacher works with them—individually or in a small group—to build writing skills over time, without holding them back in the subject they love—science.
Teachers in traditional classrooms work hard to meet the needs of every student—but with 20 or more learners in one room, it’s incredibly difficult to personalize instruction consistently, especially in the early grades. At Fox Valley Virtual School, our flexible online setting provides teachers with the space to tailor support effectively. That means students can move ahead in the subjects they love, get extra help where they need it, and build confidence without being rushed or held back.
"One advantage is that FVVS can provide a distraction-free, positive environment for learning. My kids enjoy that they can work in a quiet environment and concentrate. My kids are also able to share what they are learning with me, and I can help them if they really need it. I feel very invested and involved in their learning process, in a way that just wasn't possible when my first son was spending 40 hours a week in a brick-and-mortar school." -Parent, Fox Valley Virtual School
How Families Can Support Personalized Learning at Home
You don’t need a background in education to support personalized learning at home. In fact, you’re already doing it when you:
- Notice what time of day your child learns best.
- Help them choose how to show what they’ve learned—drawing, speaking, writing, acting it out.
- Celebrate effort and growth over perfection.
- Communicate with teachers about what’s working and what’s not.
At Fox Valley Virtual, we view caregivers as partners. We’re here to provide the structure, support, and teaching. You bring the insights and love that only a parent or guardian can offer.
"Virtual school gives our family so much flexibility. When the weather is nice, we can do our schoolwork outside. My boys love when it snows, and they are able to play outdoors around their class schedules. Many people think that virtual school means staying inside, glued to a screen all day, but that is definitely not the case! My sons are so close to each other and alternate between playing and their responsibilities. Our family is in constant motion throughout the school day." -Parent, Fox Valley Virtual School
Meeting Students Where They Are Is Just the Beginning
Personalized learning is a buzzword that appears everywhere these days. If you’re exploring school options, especially for kindergarten or elementary-aged children, it’s worth asking some important questions:
- How is every student, no matter their grade or skill level, given the chance to be seen, supported, and challenged?
- If my child falls behind in one area, how are they helped to catch up in a way that builds confidence?
- If my child excels, how will they be stretched and inspired to keep growing?
- How is technology used—not just to deliver lessons, but to help students build real-world skills?
At Fox Valley Virtual School, these questions shape the way we teach, plan, and connect with families. Meeting students where they are is just the beginning. We're here to walk alongside them as they build connections, gain confidence, and grow into empowered learners.
