We’re a Wisconsin-based virtual school with real teachers, real students, and a genuine commitment to designing learning experiences that are rooted in educational best practices and grounded in what students actually need, both academically and developmentally. Our state-certified curriculum wasn’t taken straight from a traditional school model—it was intentionally designed for virtual learning from the ground up. That means every lesson, activity, and assessment is built with online learners in mind, ensuring students get a high-quality, engaging education that works in a digital environment.
What “Curriculum” Really Means
When people hear the word curriculum, they often imagine a checklist of facts and skills—things like “memorize all 50 states” or “ability to divide by three.”
To us, curriculum means something more: it’s the plan for how students explore, understand, and apply knowledge. Our curriculum outlines the standards we follow and our goals, while also detailing the materials we use, the delivery method of lessons, and the methods we employ to assess understanding and provide additional support or challenge when needed.
Our online school curriculum isn’t a checklist; it’s a roadmap. And ours is designed to lead students not just to the correct answers, but to deeper thinking, better problem-solving, and a love of learning.
Built for Online Learners
During the pandemic, many schools had to shift rapidly to virtual learning, and in the process, they discovered what worked well and what didn’t. Fox Valley Virtual School was born out of those lessons, and our online curriculum has continued to evolve with purpose, care, and a deep understanding of what students need to succeed in an online environment.
That means:
- Flexible pacing: Students can revisit lessons, pause videos, and move at the speed that’s right for them.
- Interactive content: Learning is hands-on and engaging, even when it’s online. Think digital labs, video discussions, creative projects—not just multiple-choice worksheets.

How It Works at Each Level
Here’s a quick snapshot of how our curriculum supports students in different stages:
In Kindergarten and Early Grades:

In Upper Elementary:

A Closer Look: Poetry Across the Grades
One of the ways our curriculum builds depth over time is through the repetition of themes and skills. This thoughtful structure allows students to build on their skills year after year—not just academically, but as thinkers and creators. Many core concepts are introduced early and revisited later, each time with deeper complexity and greater independence.
Take poetry, for example: it’s not a one-time lesson, but a thread that weaves through multiple grade levels, growing alongside the student. Here's how that might look in action:
- 3rd Grade: Students are introduced to the basics of poetry, exploring rhyme, rhythm, and simple figurative language. They read a variety of poems and begin crafting their own, focusing on expression and creativity.
- 6th Grade: The curriculum delves deeper into poetic devices, including metaphor, simile, and personification. Students analyze poems for structure and meaning, and they experiment with different poetic forms in their writing.
- 8th Grade: Students engage in a critical analysis of complex poems, exploring themes, tone, and the poet's intended meaning. They also compose sophisticated poems, utilizing advanced literary devices and experimenting with free verse and structured forms.
