Hi there! I'm a kid, and I love hands-on learning. That’s what we get to do at Fox Valley Virtual School. Most people think an online school is just looking at a computer all day. Not at my school! We get to use our imaginations, create, and discover things every day!
So, hands-on learning — that’s when we get to use our hands and do things instead of just listening to our teacher, reading a book, or clicking our mouse. We get to build, create, experiment, and discover, which makes learning so much more exciting and fun!
Did you know that every month, I get a box from my school? It’s filled with all kinds of odd things. We use the things inside for science experiments, or to build contraptions, or to draw pictures. And drawing things really helps me understand them better. My teacher says, when we use more of our five senses — our sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch – we learn things better. And we all have different imaginations, so it's crazy to see what me and my classmates can create. I think I might be an inventor one day!
Hands-on learning helps us to understand things better because we get to see them and do them ourselves. It's like when we learn how to ride a bike, we can't just read about it or watch a video, we have to actually get on the bike and try it out! The same goes for learning about science, art, math, or anything else. We learn by doing, making mistakes, and trying again until we get it right.
Experts say that incorporating projects and hands-on activities into learning is a great way to deepen our understanding and retention of information (boy, those are big words!). Plus, it's more interesting, and we are more likely to stay focused and pay attention to what we're learning.
When we work on projects and hands-on activities, we also develop important skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. We learn how to work with others — even remotely — share our ideas, and invent new things.
So, hands-on learning is awesome because it makes learning more fun and memorable. It helps us to understand things better and prepare us for the future.
So, let's get our hands dirty and start learning!
