7 Tips for Creating a Home Learning Space
Creating a space where kids want to learn is crucial for their success and enjoyment of the online school learning process. Every child has his or her own learning style, interests and personality. While there is no one-size-fits-all learning environment at home, here are tips for creating an inviting and engaging space with and for your child.
-
Choose a quiet and comfortable area in your home that your child can use as a dedicated learning space. It may be a corner in their bedroom or a spare room. Ensure that the space has adequate lighting and ventilation. Incorporate natural light or use lamps to create a bright and welcoming atmosphere.
-
Provide a desk and chair appropriate for your child’s age and height. It’s best that the chair is adjustable and provides adequate support for your child’s back.
-
Organize school supplies in the learning space. Supplies can include pencils, pens, notebooks, crayons or markers, and other materials your child may need for their studies. You can use shelves, drawers, or organizers to keep everything in order.
-
Set up your Chromebook and any attached keyboards or monitors for online learning. Check to be sure that all necessary tools and software are working. If you have questions, go to the web page Connecting to Your Virtual Classroom.
-
Set up a schedule for daily learning activities to include time for online classes, homework, and other educational activities. To avoid exhaustion from study time, including time for breaks, movement, and fun! Display the schedule, so it is easy for your child and you to refer to it.
-
Minimize distractions within the learning space. For many students, this means turning off the TV and other electronics and limiting interruptions from family members or guests. Others find background music to be soothing or energizing.
-
Encourage your child to add personal touches to their learning space by adding artwork, posters, or other items that reflect their interests and personality. When children help create their learning space, it can enhance their ownership of their learning time and responsibilities. We encourage adults to let children be involved in helping make it their own and without distractions.
By incorporating some of these elements, you and your child can create an engaging, comfortable, and inviting virtual learning space. With a space they want to learn in, kids are more likely to be motivated, focused and successful in their studies.
